Terra Madre Balkan Exhibit Blagoevgrad

A new exhibit featuring the posters of this past summer’s Terra Madre Balkans (TMB) in Sofia are on display at the regional history museum in Blagoevgrad for the next month.

About forty people were in attendance to open the TMB exhibit, young and old a like gathered at the regional cultural center (Читалище). A local women’s group performed Christmas songs that are unique to the Blagoevgrad area.

Because the exhibit was about Slow Food, there were special dishes prepared that represented the surrounding villages. Like this Zelnik created by Stoika Kostadinova from Hursovo.

The culture of music and dance is ingrained from birth. The customs are indoctrinated, which ensures their survival. While the food and recipes evoke culinary tradition, the process and technique of assembling the dishes is as important and almost as ritualistic as the singing and dancing.
